Where is St. Mark’s Maples Court?
It is located on the north side of Shuter Street between King Street and Hope Street South in Port Hope, Ontario.

How large is it?
It is comprised of 6 bungalows with a total of 13 one-bedroom units and 5 studios. Each building includes a laundry room.

Who runs it?
It is an incorporated entity that has a management board of volunteers which meets to make decisions and receive reports. There is an executive committee which manages the business of the development. Contractors are hired for maintenance.

What is its relationship to St. Mark’s Church?
St. Mark’s Maples Court began in 1972 by Mr. William Charles Wesley Brown, John Leonard Sylvester, The Rev. John Ernest Gardner & The Rev. Gerald Early Moffatt, members of St. Mark’s. The board has generally been comprised of parishioners of St. Mark’s and includes the Incumbent of the Parish as an ex officio member. However, the business of Maples Court is entirely separate from the parish.

Where did it get its name?
In honour of his late wife, Mr. Brown donated the land, previously an old apple orchard, for the project and insisted that the family surname, Maples along with St. Mark’s be included in its name.

How do people find out about this housing?
Generally, it is by word of mouth. Applications are available from St. Mark’s Church Office and the Town Park Recreation Centre.

Is there a waiting list?
There are generally quite a few applications on file. When an apartment comes available the Board of Directors decides which applicant is in most need at the time.

Who qualifies to live there?
Rental accommodations are intended for seniors with limited income.

Are there any restrictions?
Applicants must be seniors.  It is a Non-smoking facility
